How to Dress Like Fran Fine Part 2
In my last article I wrote about the essential components of Fran Fine’s style that you can incorporate into your wardrobe. In this post I want to highlight how you can find second hand and vintage items to re-create Fran Fine inspired outfits.
I started this blog because I have a love for fashion. I always have, but in the past few years I started shopping vintage and second hand, and became obsessed. My main goal for this blog is to help others on their second hand and vintage journey, and encourage people to shop second hand.
Recently I have been getting a lot of style inspiration from The Nanny. The 80s and 90s are my favorite decades of fashion. I started collecting vintage pieces from the 80s and 90s and had some trouble styling them with my more “modern” items. Observing The Nanny’s fashion gave me so much inspiration on how to style 80s and 90s items in a timeless way!
Based on my last article, we know that Fran’s wardrobe consists of my many variations of similar items including turtle necks, miniskirts, tights, blazers, vests, and blouses. She also wore a lot of color blocked items, bold colors, loud patterns, sequins, and metallics. So, if you want to recreate Fran Fine inspired outfits, that is a pretty solid basis. I am sure you already own several items that fit this brief! But for the items that you want to buy, why not try second hand? The RealReal has some incredible finds. I have found so many cool 90’s Moschino pieces on The RealReal, and I’ve also found great Jean Paul-Gaultier, Mugler, Missoni, and Pucci pieces too, the list goes on! Whenever I am looking for an item of clothing, I always check the second hand platforms first. If i can’t find the item there, then I hit up ssense or Farfetch. Both of those sites carry a lot of interesting smaller designers, and they often have great sales. But when re-creating outfits from The Nanny, vintage 90’s items are a great way to go!
Miniskirts
We know that Fran Fine has a few staple items in her wardrobe. But, if I had to pick one staple Fran Fine item to start with, it would be a black miniskirt. This is an easy item to find second hand. The RealReal has a ton of black miniskirts! I buy a skirt based on the waist measurement and then just alter the length to the exact length that I want. It’s great to buy a good quality skirt second hand, and then get it tailored. To embody the Fran Fine aesthetic, the clothes must have a perfect fit after all. I did this with a black and white striped Marc Jacobs skirt that I found on The RealReal for $40. It reminded me so much of a skirt that Fran wore (pictured below). It was actually a terrible length, just below the knee, so I had it hemmed to the exact length I wanted it.
There are a lot of great affordable options for black miniskirts on TRR, like the two Mugler ones below.
And this Moschino black denim miniskirt is only $12.50!!
Here are some examples of other miniskirts I found on TRR that remind me of Fran.
blazers
The RealReal has a fabulous roster of blazers. It even has a pretty good selection of vintage 90’s Moschino blazers. That is a great place to start when searching for Fran Fine inspired items, as we know that she wore a lot of Moschino. Blazers are a classic item, and never go out of style. The trendy aspect of blazers is their fit, recently a more oversized fit has been more trendy. But I have also seen a lot of tailored blazers on the runways these past few months. I think that if you wear what you like, build a personal style, and your clothes are good quality and fit you perfectly, you don’t have to worry so much about the trends. But, that is just my opinion. I love an oversized blazer, but I also love a tailored, fitted blazer like Fran Fine wore. She always looked so amazing, that if I saw someone walking down the street in a Fran Fine outfit, with a tight blazer, I wouldn’t be thinking about the trends, I would be thinking dang that person is hot.
Fran wore a lot of statement blazers. My favorite piece of clothing from The Nanny is the rainbow color blocked blazer (pictured above). I love vintage 90s Moschino blazers in general and have bought a few myself on The RealReal. Here are some amazing vintage Moschino blazers on The RealReal to give you some inspiration.
Fran Fine also wore many gorgeous plaid jackets.
I found some funky plaid blazers on The RealReal that have a very Fran Fine vibe, and a cool plaid top vest thing that I can definitely see her in.
Suits
The RealReal has some great vintage skirt suit sets. You can use the jacket and skirt as separates too. Fran Fine did slay in her fair share of matching suit sets. Here are some examples that I found on The RealReal that are Moschino and Mugler, but I’ve also seen other designers on there like Valentino and Ungaro. You can have them tailored to fit you to perfection. Getting your garments tailored is so underrated these days!
Blouses
Miss Fine loved a statement blouse. There are so many statement blouses on The RealReal. I bought a silk Pucci blouse on The RealReal that I love, and wear it with a black vest and a miniskirt for a very Fran Fine type of outfit. The other I actually wore it with shorts, and a few people out there in the real world told me that they loved my outfit.
The white ruffle blouse that Fran wore a few times in Seasons 1 and 2 is Dolce & Gabbana. D & G is another designer brand that Fran wore often on the show.
Here a couple of D & G blouse currently available on The RealReal that are very Fran Fine. They will really pop under a brightly colored blazer or vest.
If these exact items are not available by the time you click on them, keep looking! I’m always on the hunt and finding amazing pieces on TRR, Poshmark, Mercari, and eBay. Either way, I hope these pieces that I’ve shown you give you inspiration to create some fabulous Fran Fine inspired outfits with second hand and vintage items.
