A Moschino Love Affair

Love it or hate, Moschino has provided some iconic looks over the years. Some of my favorite Moschino looks come from Fran Drescher on her 90’s show The Nanny. Fran as Nanny Fine wore a lot of incredibly fun looks, she is the epitome of 90’s Moschino! The fabulous bright colors and patterns are so pleasing to my eyes. Recently I’ve been pulling inspiration from her looks. I love the mod vibe with so many colors, patterns, miniskirts, and skirt suits.

In her Vogue - Life in Looks video, Fran talks about how she loved wearing Moschino looks on the show because they had  “pizzaz and humor”. What a fabulous diva!! This resonates for me and the way I see fashion - I also like to have fun with it. I love looking good and feeling good, and I try not to take myself too seriously. To me that means bright colors (most of the time, I do love an all black or neutral moment too), patterns, clothing that fits me well, and is comfortable! I’ve had so much fun styling my recent Moschino looks, pulling inspiration from my mom, and The Nanny.

I love that Moschino, as a brand, knows how to have fun (how many times can I say fun?). It isn’t always executed in the way that I personally like, but for me when it hits it really hits. Franco Moschino’s designs were known to be innovative and vibrant. Jeremy Scott, creative director of Moschino from 2013 to March 2023 had a similar vision to Franco, and kept the brand fun, vibrant, and in my opinion, edgy.

Recreating Vintage-Inspired Moschino Looks

The exact 90’s Moschino pieces from The Nanny can be hard to find. Especially the bright pink, green, and yellow looks that I love. I was able to acquire a few amazing Moschino items that had a similar vibe from the SSENSE sale this spring. One piece in particular is very special to me because it was inspired by my mom. My mom has great style, and has always inspired my fashion sense. She bought this Moschino cardigan earlier this season and I fell absolutely in love with it. It has all the colors I love. When I saw it on sale on SSENSE, I bought it. But then I had a little trouble styling it. My mom and I have very different body types, so I had to figure out different ways to wear it.

After wearing it the other day out to dinner with pants, I think it actually looks a lot better with shorts or a skirt, for more of that “mod” look that Moschino does so well. I also think it looks better left undone, instead of with the clasp at the top.

So, I tried it with these other Moschino pieces I got at the SSENSE spring sale. I couldn’t resist. As much as I love pink, I didn’t previously own any pink shorts, and was on the hunt for a good pair for a while. I also don’t really wear miniskirts, but I want to try! I think they are perfect for San Diego summers. It hasn’t been too hot yet, the cardigan shorts/skirt combo will work well for these temperatures. Even in the summer evenings and nights here it can get a little cool.

I wanted to use this sweater and style in a way that reminded me of The Nanny. I particularly love her green Moschino skirt suit outfit, as below.

I actually found a Moschino skirt and shorts on SSENSE (on sale too!), that I used to style the sweater with. I like this better, it feels more “The Nanny”. The shorts are more casual which is perfect for San Diego.

Vintage Moschino pieces

I also have been on the second hand platforms looking for vintage Moschino, and I did manage to find some cute pieces linked below.

I could personally see The Nanny wearing all of these pieces! I love! Apologies in advance if any of these are sold out by the time you get to them. Also, as of now, none of these are affiliate links.

You can see where I pull my inspiration from on my “The Nanny” board on Pinterest, and also from this blog - Style & Flare.
